Review of "breakfast" EU Directives

Context 

On December 12th, the European Parliament adopted its position on the revision of the so-called "breakfast" directives:

  • Directive 2001/110/EC on honey,
  • Directive 2001/112/EC on fruit juices and certain similar products,
  • Directive 2001/113/EC on fruit jams, jellies and marmalades and chestnut purée,
  • Directive 2001/114/EC relating to certain partly or wholly dehydrated preserved milk.

The European Parliament's review of the breakfast regulation in detail

The aim of this revision is to update the rules on the composition, designation, labelling and presentation of 'breakfast foods' in order to help consumers make informed and healthier decisions about food products.

What's new in the 2023 revision of the breakfast guidelines?

In particular, Member of the European Parliament approved :

  • stricter rules on labelling the country of origin of raw materials for honey, fruit juices, jams, jellies, marmalades and sweetened chestnut purée;
  • the introduction of a traceability system for the honey supply chain to combat fraud;
  • the creation of a reference laboratory for honey;
  • new sugar content labelling requirements for greater transparency.
